Before people carried smartphones, they carried fragrance. Not spray bottles — cloth sachets, silk pouches, small carved objects hung from belts. This is wearable incense, and it is one of the oldest forms of personal fragrance in the world.
In China, wearable incense (香囊, Xiang Nang) was a standard part of dress from the Han Dynasty through the Ming Dynasty. Officials wore them at court. Scholars wore them in their studios. The practice is currently experiencing a revival.

The History of 香囊: Chinese Sachets Through History
- Han Dynasty: Officials at court wore香囊 as part of formal dress. The scent was a mark of refinement and status.
- Tang Dynasty: Elaborate香囊 made of silk with embroidery, thoroughly mainstream.
- Song Dynasty: Especially associated with scholar-official culture.
- 20th-21st Century: Currently experiencing revival.
How to Make an Incense Sachet at Home (DIY Guide)
What you need: Natural aromatic materials (dried lavender, sandalwood chips, benzoin resin), a small cloth pouch (silk, cotton, or linen), optional 2-3 drops of natural essential oil.
Steps:
- Fill the pouch 1/2 to 2/3 full. Do not overfill — air needs to circulate.
- Close securely. Tie firmly if drawstring.
- Optional: add 2-3 drops of essential oil. Let absorb for 24 hours before first use.
- Place in an airtight container for 3-5 days. This is called “marriage.”
- Open and use. The scent will last 1-3 months.
Modern Wearable Incense: Solid Perfumes
The contemporary equivalent is solid perfume (香膏, Xiang Gao). Fragrant material suspended in wax or oil base, applied to pulse points.
How to make solid perfume: Melt 1 part beeswax with 2 parts carrier oil (jojoba or sweet almond). Remove from heat. Add 5-10% fragrant material. Pour into small containers. Let cool and solidify. Apply to wrists, behind ears, on collarbone.
