You have seen them — the flat spiral shapes that look like mosquito coils. Maybe you have walked into a temple in Asia and the air was thick with slow-burning fragrant smoke. That is coil incense.
Coil incense (Pan Xiang, 盘香) is designed for one purpose: long, continuous burning without attention. A coil can burn for 8 hours or more. This is why temples use them.
What Is Coil Incense? Pan Xiang Explained
Pan means “coil” or “plate.” The name describes the shape: a flat spiral, usually 5-20cm in diameter, with a consistent thickness throughout.
The spiral shape is intentional: the burning front moves inward from the outer edge, and the consistent cross-section means burn time is predictable.

How Coil Incense Works
Unlike stick incense where the burn front moves along the length, coil incense burns in a circle. The width of the coil strip determines burn time: wider = slower = longer.
Most coil incense is formulated to burn at a lower temperature than stick incense. Less visible smoke, subtler scent, longer duration.
When to Use Coil Incense (And When Not To)
Good: Long work sessions, yoga practice, setting mood for gatherings, sleep (with proper ventilation), meditation retreats.
Not ideal: Short meditation sessions, beginners still learning to identify materials, rooms with significant airflow.

How to Burn Coil Incense Safely
- Use the correct holder. Coil holders have a spike or cone at the center to hold the coil.
- Place on a stable, non-flammable surface. Heavy to prevent tipping.
- Light the outer end. Hold flame for 5-10 seconds until fully catching.
- Ensure ventilation. One window cracked. Coils produce smoke continuously.
- Never leave unattended.
Coil Incense FAQ
How do I stop a coil when I am done?
Wet your fingers and pinch the burning end firmly. Or place in a sealed metal container to suffocate the flame.
Why does my coil smell different than stick incense from the same brand?
Different burn methods produce different scent profiles. Coil burning at lower temperature extracts different aromatic compounds.
