You keep seeing Chinese incense everywhere. Pinterest. That one Instagram account. Your friend burns it and your whole apartment smells like heaven. But you have no idea where to start.
That’s what this 7-day plan is for. No fluff. No expensive gear. Just you, some basic incense, and a week to see if this whole Xiangdao thing is for you.
Day 1: Just Smell It
Don’t buy anything today. Go online, find a reputable seller (look for stores that list ingredients clearly), and order a basic sampler pack. Look for: one sandalwood stick, one agarwood stick, one herbal blend. Under $30 should cover it.
While you wait for delivery, read about the history of Chinese incense. It helps. Trust me.
Day 2: Your First Burn
Open a window. Light your first stick (sandalwood is gentlest). Let the smoke drift. Don’t do anything else. Just sit there and smell it.
Most people expect something dramatic. It’s usually quieter than that. That subtlety? That’s the real thing.
Day 3: Learn the Shapes
Incense comes in more forms than you think. You bought a sampler, so now’s the time to try them all:
- Stick incense — burns 20-40 minutes. Easiest to start with.
- Coil incense — burns for hours. Good for when you’re working.
- Powder — requires a vessel and charcoal. More hands-on.
Write down what you like. Be honest with yourself: did you actually enjoy that sandalwood, or were you just pretending?
Day 4: Set Up a Spot
Pick one corner of your home. A desk. A bedside table. Somewhere you’ll see it daily. This is your incense spot. You don’t need a fancy burner—a small ceramic dish works fine. Place it somewhere the ash can catch safely.
Day 5: Try an Ancient Recipe
Burning plain sticks is fine. But Xiangdao gets interesting when you explore blended incense—known as hexiang in Chinese. Try something like E Li Zhang Zhong Xiang (goose pear and sandalwood) if you can find it. Notice how the layers change as you breathe.
Day 6: Journal About It
Write three sentences: What did you notice? How did you feel? Would you do it again?
Most people who “try” incense never actually build the habit. The difference between those who make it part of their life and those who don’t? Reflection. They notice patterns. They adjust.
Day 7: Commit or Move On
Be honest with yourself. Did burning incense actually do something for you? Did you feel calmer? More focused? Did it enhance your space?
If yes: you’re in. Order a proper starter kit. Pick up a basic incense burner. Set a weekly schedule.
If no: that’s fine too. But at least you tried properly instead of burning one stick in a drafty room and calling it done.
What You Actually Need (Under $50)
- A sampler pack with 3-5 different scents ($15-25)
- A small ceramic or wooden incense holder ($5-15)
- A coil burner or charcoal set if you want to go deeper ($10-20)
That’s it. No expensive setup. No complicated ritual. Just smell, notice, repeat.
Chinese Xiangdao isn’t about performing. It’s about paying attention. And you can start doing that today.
